From 25th January 2007 until late March 2007 (date to be confirmed)

This month's image is the rather alarming Storm Over Littondale:

This image was captured way up Littondale late on a winter afternoon, with clouds rushing by and casting ever-changing shadows on the daleside.

This was one of the images in my Yorkshire Through The Seasons exhibition at Harrogate Library last month.  Thanks to everyone that visited, and for the nice comments in the visitors book, some of which are now available to view on the website at:

www.marksunderland.com/Exhibitions/YorkshireThroughTheSeasons.html

My apologies if you were hoping to read a message announcing a January Sale!

Unfortunately last year's alignment of prices between web and art show sales, with the introduction of separate delivery charges, was the last reduction in prices that I am able to offer (ever).  This is, of course, great news if you bought a print in 2006, as prices are only going upwards from now on!  However, my fine art print prices will remain at the current levels for the time being - but I am expecting them to rise later in 2007.

Due to production costs, my A5 greetings card price will rise to £2.80 this month.

Mark Sunderland's Yorkshire Through The Seasons exhibition is now showing at The Stairwell Gallery, Harrogate Library!

Yorkshire Through The Seasons comprises a selection of new images of the Yorkshire Dales, Moors and Coast taken by Mark Sunderland over the past year. Mark, originally from Tadcaster, left Yorkshire to go to university but moved back in 2005, after an absence of 24 years, settling in Knaresborough. He then set about photographing the landscape of his native county with fresh eyes, using the techniques acquired and a style developed over the last decade on journeys to more distant landscapes in the western USA, Patagonia and Iceland. This exhibition is the result of the first year of this project.

The exhibition comprises 35 framed 50x40cm prints produced personally by Mark using the latest ultrachrome K3 pigment inks for archival permanence on a beautiful fine art 100% cotton paper from the James Cropper paper mill in Cumbria.

View Article  Mark Sunderland Wins English Heritage Photography Competition

Excerpts from a recent press release...

Knaresborough photographer Mark Sunderland has won a defining image competition run by English Heritage photography project ‘Images of England.  Mark, who has been an Images of England volunteer for over a year, photographed the East Pier Lighthouse in Whitby and his image was selected from thousands as the winner.  Mark won a state of the art digital camera, a Photoshop training session and a £500 voucher for ‘Sky imaging (UK) Ltd’ who sponsored and judged the competition.

East Pier Lighthouse, Whitby by Mark Sunderland

Krystyna Szulecka, also from Yorkshire, took second place in the defining image competition with an image of a listed Boundary Stone near Long Preston, winning a ‘Sky Imaging (UK) Ltd’ voucher.  For further details on Krystyna’s work, see her website www.clikc.co.uk

The Images of England project, run by the National Monuments Record, the public archive of English Heritage, has created an easy to use website that allows people to research the listed buildings in their local area and compare them to others across the country.  Almost 260,000 images of listed buildings, taken for the project, along with statutory list descriptions, can be viewed by visiting the Images of England website at www.imagesofengland.org.uk

Mark said: “My winning image was taken at the end of an enjoyable photography day with a group of other Images of England volunteer photographers.  I saved the lighthouse until last, hoping to capture it in some decent late afternoon light, and was rewarded with perfect soft sunshine which adds a little mood to the image whilst still retaining the architectural detail required to record the subject for the Images of England project.  Rather than a closer vertical shot of the building itself, I thought it better to set it in its environment.  I spotted the boat approaching on the horizon, so waited for it to just enter the harbour to add to the image.”

“Wherever I have photographed for Images of England, I have discovered so much more about local history and architectural heritage and am very pleased to have been involved in such an invaluable resource for the future.”

View Article  August Image of The Month: North Window and Turret Arch

This month's image is one of the oldest images on my website, but remains a firm favourite.

I took this image on my first trip with a group with Nigel Turner around the Canyons of The South West in 1995.  We had stayed at Moab, quite some distance away, rather than in Arches National Park itself, so had to get up very early to be at this location in time for the summer sunrise.  I've seen quiet a few images of this subject, and they mostly have plain blue sky behind the arch, so we were quite lucky with the nice cloud formations on the horizon - however, this nearly spoiled the shot completely, as the low cloud was all around and it obscured the rising sun initially, making the formations look flat and lifeless.  Fortunately, a break in the cloud allowed the sun to stream through for a few moments, making the rocks glow and making this shot possible.

This month's image is the mysterious Silk In The Wind taken in Antelope Canyon in Arizona:

This image was taken looking almost directly upwards from the deep slot canyon floor towards this light above, giving the dark outline all around the subject.  Many people have said that this image looks more like a soft material rather than sandstone, and one remarked that it looked like silk blowing in the wind - hence the title!

View Article  June Image of The Month: Glastonbury Tor

Regular visitors to my site will know that I change the main page image every month.  As it's June now I thought I'd go back to my summer solstice (well, almost) image of Glastonbury Tor...

I took this image a few years ago now.  It was a couple of days before the solstice as there was a clear weather forecast that day, but it was raining on the solstice itself.  However, I was pleased with the sun's position just at the base of the tower.

I actually arrived far too early for this image, not knowing how long after sunrise the sun would appear over the Tor.  So, I had stumbled up the hill in complete darkness and watched the sky change colour around the Tor as the sun came up.  It didn't reach this point until around six, so I had quite a wait.  On the way back down the hill, I noticed a chap sleeping in a bivvy bag near the path - an early arrival for the solstice celebration it would seem - I must have walked right past him in the dark, so he's lucky I didn't stand on him!

View Article  Fine Art Digital Printing

I have been using digital capture for some time now for my stock images, but since moving up to a camera with a full-frame sensor (the Canon EOS 5D) last autumn I have also been using this for my landscape work. My new autumn and winter in the dales images, including Silver Birch, Brimham Rocks below have been produced in this way.

As a result, I have for some time been looking for a digital printing process in order to produce fine art prints from my new images, as I can't use the Ilfochrome (Cibachrome) darkroom process that I used for my film based images.

So, I have been working with an Epson Ultrachrome K3 printer for a while now, trying out a variety of fine art papers.  My favourite by far has been the Impart Photo Smooth High White Cotton 315gsm fine art paper which I sourced direct from the James Cropper paper mill (www.papermilldirect.com) not that far away in Kendal, Cumbria.  This is a 100% cotton paper which gives excellent archival properties with the Ultrachrome K3 inkset, estimated at 75+ years.

I have been very pleased with the results and, although I did like the ultra high gloss surface of Ilfochrome, I am delighted with the colour reproduction in my new prints.  The paper also has a great feel to it, and is less prone to kinks and buckles than the almost metallic Ilfochrome surface, so I find I can mount it in just an acid free window mount with a backing card without the need for sticking the print to 5mm foamboard, which is much better from an archival point of view.

My recent panel of images in the Harrogate Photographic Society's Poetry in Pictures exhibition in Leeds used this process, and the results were well received, I am pleased to say.

I am therefore, from today, offering these lovely new digital prints as standard from all of the images on my website in A4, A3 and A3+ sizes.  This has the added benefit that I can can print the images myself and sign the work onto the image border inside the window mount, giving me complete artistic control over the whole process which I have not had since I printed black and white in the darkroom.

For further details visit http://www.marksunderland.com/prints.html or browse through the image portfolio at http://www.marksunderland.com/portfolio.html

Until I can also offer an A2 sized print, I will continue to produce Ilfochrome prints up to 24x20 from my 5x4 film originals (smaller from smaller formats).  Please get in touch with me directly to arrange this service from now on.

View Article  Gordale Beck in Spring

The good thing about using a blog to post my news articles is that I can include things that wouldn't go in my email newsletter, such as work in progress.

This image was taken just yesterday in woodland around Gordale Beck just below Janet's Foss near Malham.

The wild garlic is in full flower at the moment, which was the main reason for my visit, but the lighting was a bit tricky, and it was a touch windy for landscape photography involving trees!  I captured this during a bit of a lull, and I think there's just enough movement in the leaves to add a bit of impact.

For those of you who are interested in these things, this is a stitched panorama using three images from a Canon EOS 5D.  I've cropped it a little at top and bottom to produce something in the 6x17 format.

I think it works rather well - feel free to comment!
