This striking formation near the Arizona/Utah border can only be reached by a fairly strenuous hike over dunes and slick rock, but it is well worth the effort. The rock glows bright yellow and orange at sunset.

A very early start is required to capture this summer sunrise in Arches National Park. The rising sun was obscured by the low cloud on the horizon, but just broke through for a few moments, making the rocks glow an intense orange-red

East Pier Lighthouse Whitby - Images of England Defining Image Competition Winner

My winning image was taken at the end of an enjoyable photography day with a group of other Images of England volunteer photographers. I saved the lighthouse until last, hoping to capture it in some decent late afternoon light, and was rewarded with perfect soft sunshine which adds a little mood to the image whilst still retaining the architectural detail required to record the subject for the Images of England project. Rather than a closer vertical shot of the building itself, I thought it better to set it in its environment. I spotted the boat approaching on the horizon, so waited for it to just enter the harbour to add to the image.

The ruin of the castle keep at Knaresborough is a little featureless so it's difficult to come up with an interesting photograph of it. I opted for this angled composition, using the clouds to balance up the image.
