Dalesman Feature: A Different View

Entitled 'A Different View' - another angle to some of the Dales most popular beauty spots, two semi-abstract shots of How Stean Gorge and Malham Cove take up the centre pages.

Transatlantic - A Talk by Mark Sunderland at Harrogate Photographic Society

Mark Sunderland will be presenting images from countries on both sides of the Atlantic in a talk to be held at Harrogate Photographic Society this evening, Monday 5th November 2007.

Mark will be showing work from trips to the American South West, South America and around Europe from over the past decade or so, and finishing with more recent work from England, particularly Yorkshire.

Harrogate Photographic Society meets at The Friends Meeting Hall, Homestead Road, Harrogate at 7:45pm.

February Image of The Month: Farndale in Winter

This month's image shows a light dusting of snow over the patchwork fields in Farndale on a winter day:

After taking this image, as I was putting the camera gear away, some of the sheep came over to the nearby gate - clearly hoping I was about to produce a fresh bale of hay from the back of the car, but sadly I had nothing to give them!

November Image of The Month: Beech Trunks

Mark Sunderland Photography Now Accepts PayPal

Mark Sunderland Photography is pleased to announce that all online payments will from today be handled by PayPal. This gives additional flexibility, allowing customers to pay through their existing PayPal account if they have one, whilst still retaining the ability to pay securely with a credit card without the need for a PayPal account.

Along with this change, a new smaller 30x24cm print size has been introduced at just £27, and online prices of all prints have been brought into line with sales at art markets and shows, with postage and packing now being charged separately on the website. This represents an overall reduction in prices.

This month's image was taken last autumn in the Yorkshire Dales...

I was photographing West Burton Falls in Wensleydale, and noticed this tiny waterfall in the stream at my feet as I was working. I was attracted to the zig-zag line of this composition, which I prefer to the images of the main falls that I got on that day!

Mark Sunderland Wins English Heritage Photography Competition

Knaresborough photographer Mark Sunderland has won a defining image competition run by English Heritage photography project ‘Images of England’. Mark, who has been an Images of England volunteer for over a year, photographed the East Pier Lighthouse in Whitby and his image was selected from thousands as the winner. Mark won a state of the art digital camera, a Photoshop training session and a £500 voucher for ‘Sky imaging (UK) Ltd’ who sponsored and judged the competition.

Krystyna Szulecka, also from Yorkshire, took second place in the defining image competition with an image of a listed Boundary Stone near Long Preston, winning a ‘Sky Imaging (UK) Ltd’ voucher. For further details on Krystyna’s work, see her website www.clikc.co.uk

The Images of England project, run by the National Monuments Record, the public archive of English Heritage, has created an easy to use website that allows people to research the listed buildings in their local area and compare them to others across the country. Almost 260,000 images of listed buildings, taken for the project, along with statutory list descriptions, can be viewed by visiting the Images of England website at www.imagesofengland.org.uk

Mark said: “My winning image was taken at the end of an enjoyable photography day with a group of other Images of England volunteer photographers. I saved the lighthouse until last, hoping to capture it in some decent late afternoon light, and was rewarded with perfect soft sunshine which adds a little mood to the image whilst still retaining the architectural detail required to record the subject for the Images of England project. Rather than a closer vertical shot of the building itself, I thought it better to set it in its environment. I spotted the boat approaching on the horizon, so waited for it to just enter the harbour to add to the image.”

“Wherever I have photographed for Images of England, I have discovered so much more about local history and architectural heritage and am very pleased to have been involved in such an invaluable resource for the future.”

July Image of The Month: Silk In The Wind

This month's image is the mysterious Silk In The Wind taken in Antelope Canyon in Arizona:

This image was taken looking almost directly upwards from the deep slot canyon floor towards this light above, giving the dark outline all around the subject. Many people have said that this image looks more like a soft material rather than sandstone, and one remarked that it looked like silk blowing in the wind - hence the title!

Gordale Beck in Spring

The good thing about using a blog to post my news articles is that I can include things that wouldn't go in my email newsletter, such as work in progress.

This image was taken just yesterday in woodland around Gordale Beck just below Janet's Foss near Malham.

The wild garlic is in full flower at the moment, which was the main reason for my visit, but the lighting was a bit tricky, and it was a touch windy for landscape photography involving trees! I captured this during a bit of a lull, and I think there's just enough movement in the leaves to add a bit of impact.

For those of you who are interested in these things, this is a stitched panorama using three images from a Canon EOS 5D. I've cropped it a little at top and bottom to produce something in the 6x17 format.

I think it works rather well - feel free to comment!
